Spanning six countries across much of the Congo Basin, the Congolese Rainforest is the second largest rainforest in the world. A medley of rivers, forests, savannah, swamp and flooded woodland, the basin teems with life: gorillas, elephants and buffaloes all call the region home. Central Africa’s deforestation rate since 1990 has been the lowest of any major forest region in the world. Deforestation in the Congo over the past 20 years has often been from small-scale subsistence agriculture, clearing for charcoal and fuelwood, urban expansion and mining. All of this has indirect knock-on effects with logging roads opening up areas of the Congo to commercial poaching, leading to a 62% drop in the region’s forest elephant population in less than a decade.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and rainforest region are two Costa Rican reserves in the Puntarenas and Alajuela provinces. It’s termed a “Cloud Forest” because clouds hover around the upper canopy before condensing onto the leaves of trees. This creates a cycle of moisture that characterizes all rainforests, this life-giving condensation that allows for a large amount of biodiversity. As a fun fact, Monteverde has incredible wildlife – over 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, and 1,200 species of amphibians and reptiles. It’s also one of the few habitats left that support all six species of “big cats”: jaguars, pumas, margays, ocelots, oncillas, and jaguarundis. Travel to Costa Rica to walk on the tops of clouds and to see this stunning landscape!

Congo Rainforest: The Congo rainforest is the second largest in the world and covers a total area of 1,780,000 km2. It is found in Central Africa and also has one of the longest rivers running from within it. The rainforest covers a bigger part of Northern Congo. The Congo River is the world’s second largest river by volume, draining an area of 3.7 million square kilometers known as the Congo Basin. Nine countries; Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia have part of their territory in the Congo Basin. They are conventionally six countries with extensive forest cover in the region, which are generally associated with the Congo rainforest: Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon. The Congo rainforest is also widely recognized for its high levels of biodiversity, characterized with more than 600 tree species and 10,000 animal species. Some of its most famous residents include forest elephants, gorillas, chimpanzees, okapi, and lions.

The El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rain forest in the national forest system. At nearly 29,000 acres, it is one of the smallest in size, yet one of the most biologically diverse of the national forests hosting hundreds of animal and plant species, some of which are found only here. Planning a Visit to El Yunque National Forest? You can find information on the trails, recreation areas and services currently available. Trails to the ever popular La Mina waterfalls remain closed for repairs at this time. Here’s a map of areas currently open in the Forest. Discover extra details on https://www.recordandoyunque.store/blogs/news. From the start I took photos of the forest. As technology advanced I saw in 2013 an opportunity to document, in a scientific way, every detail of this forest. Now over 10K images later, I believe I am only starting. Then Hurricane Maria came totally unexpected, and decimated the forest canopy. A new world arose here.
